Comic-Con 2012: Inspiration and creativity at every turn.

Aug 6

This was my second year attending (surviving?) the 4-day chaos that is San Diego Comic-Con – the largest Comic-Con there is. What comics do I read? None. So why would a non-comic-book-reading girl like myself go to Comic-Con? Because, to some peoples’ dismay, Comic-Con goes way beyond comic books. While you will still find sweaty nerds huddled in a room discussing the latest incarnation of Justice League, Comic-Con is also a massive showcase of the latest and greatest in entertainment,…

Moneyball: A great story about the future of marketing.

Jun 16

About the movie. In Moneyball, the Oakland A’s, a desperately underfunded team, adopt an analytical, evidence-based approach to assembling a team and winning games. Despite industry criticism and organizational push-back, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), ignores conventional wisdom – he shifts focus from gut instinct and standard statistics like stolen bases, RBIs, and batting averages (typically used to gauge players) to alternative metrics such as on-base and slugging percentages. These stats steer the team’s decisions about recruitment, management, even coaching. In…

How Moleskine saved what was left of my artistic soul.

Apr 11

May sound kind of weird but Moleskine actually reconnected me with an artistic portion of my soul, lost to a management role and it’s responsibilities: department planning, staffing, resource management, pitching, presenting, and directing. My CD role simply didn’t require my drawing skills. I no longer needed to create comps or storyboards. I didn’t need to supplement my designs with hand-drawn elements. so I just stopped drawing pictures. Instead I produced hundreds of doodles. Completely disposable doodles. After encountering a…

Target, DeadMau5, and Just Dance 3 – all made possible by Possible.

Feb 14

We recently wrapped our broadcast campaign for the Just Dance 3 campaign: a bunch of broadcast and videos built out of a collection of UGC from around the world. During a 6 month production spree we created a 90second trailer for E3, a :60 Trailer for the Kinect announcement, a :60 online trailer, two :30 spots and two :15 second spots for the US, and three :30 spots and about 20 different customized localizations for 10 different countries. Most exhausting…

Why We Didn’t Enter the Addy’s This Year (An Open Letter to the AAFMP)

Dec 15

The AAFMP is a great group of people who work very hard to organize one of the few events that gets all of us ad-people together once a year. So when we decided not to enter we thought the AAFMP and our employees deserved an explanation. So I wrote the following letter to Carol Murphy, the Executive Director here in Phoenix. I’m making it public because, in her response, Carol expressed a need for this kind of feedback. They need…

Toby Pederson: A Photographer Who Makes Me Miss Print.

Nov 10

Before moving back to AZ, I was an ACD at Ignited in LA and spent 5 years running the Sony Vaio Latin America account. We we responsible for creating their primary marketing materials (including broadcast, print ads, brochures, POP displays, product microsites and localization kits) for use in 9 markets throughout Latin America. It was a great account because the multi-national use of the materials required us to differentiate their new products visually. As a result, we produced a lot…

1 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze at 2010 MI-6 award show

Apr 20

Winning awards when you don’t expect to is great, especially when you’re up against agencies you’ve been reading about for years. Nomadic went to MI-6 humble, just glad to be in San Fran for a few days, looking forward to a little face time with the client. We wound up with one Gold, two Silver and one Bronze MI-6 Marketing Awards for our work on Ubisoft’s CSI: Deadly Intent and Just Dance video games – taking home hardware in every…
